Uncovering the secrets of the gut-brain axis
Clinical DFG Research Group KFO 5024 (GB.Com)
The term “gut-brain axis” is based on the assumption that there is a connection between neurological diseases and immunological changes in the gastrointestinal tract, i.e. that the gut and brain communicate with each other - and that diseases of both systems could influence or even cause each other. The interactions are controlled by a highly complex communication of neuronal, hormonal, metabolic, immunological and microbial signals. Our newly established clinical DFG research group KFO 5024 (GB.Com) at the German Center for Immunotherapy (DZI) at Erlangen University Hospital is investigating exactly what constitutes this communication. This is being carried out in close interdisciplinary collaboration between immunology, gastroenterology and neuroscience, as well as the integration of bioinformatics, machine learning and medical technology.
